City of Riverside CA Streams Largest Holiday Lighting Festival in the Western US Using VBrick Systems
IP Video Streaming Enables City Officials to Make 18th Annual Lighting Ceremony Accessible to All Residents

Wallingford, Conn. – December 20, 2010 – IP video technology leader VBrick Systems today announced that the City of Riverside, Calif. has used VBrick’s IP video streaming technology to provide residents with a live broadcast of its Festival of Lights Switch-On Ceremony.

Now in its 18th year, the Festival of Lights is the largest display of Holiday lights west of the Mississippi with more than 3.5 million bulbs illuminating the city.  Traditionally residents have had to gather on the city’s streets prior to the official flip of the switch and squeeze in next to more than 50,000 of their neighbors.  Due to these large crowds, many residents have opted not to attend in recent years and, thus, missed experiencing the magic of the occasion.

This year city officials tapped VBrick Systems video solutions products to capture the live event and stream it over IP to the control room of Riverside’s government cable access channel.  VBrick’s seamless, highly scalable streaming capabilities enabled thousands of residents to watch the event as it unfolded either on television or via the Web.

“We’re proud to have had a hand in spreading the spirit of the holidays to the residents of Riverside,” said Michael Rubin, Vice President of Marketing at VBrick.  “Due to the breadth and reach of our streaming video technology, we look forward to supporting the efforts of Riverside and the local cable access channels of many other cities not only around the holidays, but in all of their video endeavors.”

VBrick was also tasked with maximizing the experience for the 50,000 residents who showed up to watch the flipping of the switch.  To do this, the city installed two 35-foot digital signs near the official switch-on site to provide residents at the back of the crowd a front row seat to the ceremony.  Using VBrick H.264 IP video encoding and decoding appliances, the live feed was transmitted via the city’s WiFi network to wireless laptops connected to each screen.
VBrick is the only company that offers the  fully comprehensive H.264 video streaming solutions.  These solutions offer distinct advantages that include significantly higher video resolution; improved network bandwidth utilization; broader distribution capabilities spanning mobile and fixed devices; and new adaptive streaming that ensures the highest-quality user experience.
